Grass in the Field

There was a tribe in Africa that converted to Christianity when missionaries came through. While learning more about their new faith, these believers began to make a habit of going out into a field to pray. Each person secured his own personal spot in the field, and as they spent time on their knees in prayer, the grass began to die.    Eventually some began to cool off in their devotion, and they started to neglect their daily prayer time. This led to the adoption of a new phrase in the tribe, don’t let grass grow in your prayer field. The problem with many Christians in the church is they are letting grass grow in their prayer field.    Jesus assumes His followers will pray. In Luke 11, when speaking with one of the disciples of John the Baptist, Jesus said, “When you pray…” Notice that He did not say,  If  you pray, but  When  you pray. Prayer should be a part of the Christian’s routine.    Jesus continued with a humorous parable abou...

Catechism #40

Q. What is prayer? A. Prayer is the offering up of our desires unto God, with confession of sin and thankful acknowledgment of His mercies . The New Testament speaks frequently about prayer; therefore, it is dangerous to take one verse about prayer, to the exclusion of all others, and form a dogmatic view. Instead, a believer would be wise to take all the verses about prayer into account when forming a conclusion. For example, the Bible says to pray in faith (James 1:6-7), to ask in Jesus’ name (John 14:14), to make our requests to God (Philippians 4:6), and to pray for God’s will to be done (Matthew 6:10). To highlight just one aspect of prayer is to miss out on other equally important areas. While it is true that we need faith, sometimes God will still not answer our prayers the way we want Him to. When Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He had perfect faith, and yet the Father did not grant Jesus His dying request. We have to balance our wants with God’s will...

In Jesus' Name We Play

My hometown has ejected God from the football field. Orange County, which includes Orlando, made a decision this season to not allow Christian chaplains to minister to student athletes. Chaplains, which are a staple on almost every sideline, typically lead players in voluntary pre- and post-game prayers, and are there for players in time of crisis. The public school system went a step further, banning Bible verses and references to the Bible from campuses. The decisions came after a threat was made by the Freedom From Religion organization. The very name of this organization is unconstitutional. The Bill of Rights guarantees us freedom of religion, not freedom from it. If people do not want religion, they have freedom from it, but the State cannot infringe upon the rights of those who do want religion. Liberals are quick to cry, “ Separation of church and State !” But they fail to see that the line of separation goes both ways. The Founders’ fear was not that the Ch...

Christianity and Women Part 2

I recently wrote about some of the characters in the Bible that illustrate how highly Christianity views women , and in this post I want to look at some of the instructions that are given in regards to women today. As a wife a woman has a unique call and office to hold. How does God’s Word instruct the husband to deal with his wife? For starters, he is told to view her for what she is: a priceless treasure. “An excellent wife, who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.” Proverbs 31:10 That same chapter tells the husband that he is to recognize and appreciate his wife’s character, not just her beauty: “Her husband also…praises her: ‘ Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.’ Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:28-30 The New Testament gives further instruction for how the husband is to treat his bride. The Apostle Paul, who himself never married, was...
