Because He Lives

Over the last 12 hours I have seen many comments on social media that indicate that Christians are disheartened over yesterday’s election. There were certainly some things that got me down too, and I can relate to some of the concern.

But first, let me be clear: this is not an anti-Obama blog. The name-calling and racial slurs are uncalled for and unbecoming towards the office of our President. That is also a sign of the non-believer, not the Christian.

The concern that I am referring to is in regards to the direction we are headed as a nation. I am not disheartened that President Obama was reelected; what saddened me are the results in regards to the moral issues. Two states legalized same sex marriage, two other states legalized the recreational smoking of pot, and then there is the abortion issue.

I know a lot of you Christians feel the same way that I do—protecting the unborn is a top priority. One of the most Christ like things we can do is give a voice to the voiceless, and defend the youngest members of our society from being killed against their will. That, more than any other factor, is what got me down last night.

But then the sun came up this morning. My coffee tasted as good as it ever has. The trees outside my window displayed their brilliant oranges, reds, and yellows, reminding me that we are in a season of Thanksgiving. I spent time in the Word and talking to my Lord, and I know that He is alive and well. And so am I.

I can’t control the choices that this country makes, but I can choose to rejoice in the fact that I am forgiven and redeemed by God. I will consider the birds and the lilies; they don’t worry or stress. They are cared for by God, and how much more does He care for me?

Some of you, like me, worry about raising your children in this world. Take heart. Gloria Gaither had the same concerns in 1974, and that is what led her husband Bill to write the song Because He Lives.

How sweet to hold a newborn baby,
And feel the pride and joy he gives;
But greater still the calm assurance:
This child can face uncertain days because He Lives!
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow,
Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future,
And life is worth the living,
Just because He lives!

Hi Tommy, I am not even American and I was disheartened by the reelection of Obama. I think Billy Graham put it best, we should be voting based on Biblical values. Why can't he run for office???
Abortion is one of my top concerns. As a woman who has lost a son I take it personally when he is called an unviable tissue or non person.
But you are right. We have hope. We have not lost anything. We have the same loving God we had yesterday. There was a photo on FB that said it best, "No matter who is president, Jesus is King."
I have friends who live in your country and so I always have your leadership in my prayers.
Thank you Elaine. Please do keep our leadership in your prayers, as they are in mine as well.

I also pray for an end to abortion, and I am sorry to hear of your lost son. I believe that he is alive and well in "heaven's nursery," and you will see him again.

To Save a Life

(Like my blog about the peace symbol, this blog was written as a default response to all the parents, students, and other people who are asking my opinion of To Save a Life.) By now you have probably heard of the movie To Save a Life, which opened nation-wide in theaters on January 22nd. The movie deals with so many issues that teens face today, like suicide, cutting, drinking, drugs, premarital sex, teen pregnancy, and abortion. At first glance this movie looks like an awesome resource that we should recommend for our teens, parents, youth pastors, and youth workers. But a closer look at the movie reveals a few disturbing things. For starters, according to pluggedin.com, there are 2 uses of the “A” word, 5 uses of hell (used as a curse word), and once the “D” word is used. There are other crude terms used to describe a girl, and crude terms for referring to sexual activity. There is also a bedroom scene that shows a girl removing a boy’s shirt, then afterwards the girl putting he

Evangelism

“Preach the gospel at all times, and when necessary, use words.” St. Francis of Assisi is given credit for this famous quote (although that exact phrasing does not appear in any of his writings), and a lot of people would think that this is a great philosophy. His actual quote was that everyone should “preach by their deeds.” Preaching with our deeds is not just a strategy, it is a necessity. We are commanded all through the Scriptures to let our light shine and be a peculiar people. People should be able to look at our lives and see that we are Christians. They should see the love of Christ readily on display, and thus feel compelled to live their lives in the same way. The sermon that we should preach with our lives is a sermon of love, joy, peace, patience, self-control, forgiveness, conviction, etc. But this idea that has emerged that says we should ONLY preach with our deeds is a heresy straight from the devil himself. Think about it: who is the one that does not want you t

What is a Curse Word?

I know. Stupid question, right? But lately I have heard Christians begin to debate what actually makes a word a curse word. Since the Bible never says, “Thou shalt not say the ‘s’ word,” how do we know that a word is bad? Because of this I have heard Christians justify cursing. The Bible gives a broad command for Christians to adhere to: let no corrupt word come out of your mouth (Ephesians 4:29). The word corrupt means rotten; therefore, we should never say a rotten word, whether it is on the list of curse words or not. First, we have to realize that there are curse words. On the night of Jesus’ arrest Peter was found guilty of using one himself. Matthew 26:74 tells us that when Peter denied knowing Jesus that he began “to curse and to swear.” This verse shows that there are curse words, and that they are wrong to use. I’m sure whatever words Peter said were not the same curse words that we have in our culture today. Here is the point: a curse word (or rotten word) is any wo
