On the night of the Tenth Plague in Egypt God told Moses He was going to pass through the land and strike down all the firstborn, but He would spare each household where the blood of a spotless lamb was applied to the outside of the door.
Exodus 12:23 says, “For the LORD will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when He sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you.”
God was clear. He was going to pass through, but for some He would pass over.
That is not just an old story, but serves as a model of what is going to happen in the future. God has promised to return, and when the Lord comes again He will come in judgment. John the Baptist said His winnowing fork will be in His hand (Luke 3:17). Jesus said He would separate the wheat from the chaff (Matthew 13:24-30); in another passage He said He would divide the sheep from the goats (Matthew 25:31-46). The wheat and the sheep will hear “Well done,” while the chaff and the goats will hear “Depart from me.”
Just like He did in Egypt 3,500 years ago, God is going to pass through in judgment. Back then He passed over each house that had the blood of the lamb applied to the lintel and door posts (which resembled a cross that bore a crucified body, a thousand years before crucifixion was invented). When He passes through next time He will pass over each person who has applied the blood of the Lamb of God (John 1:29) to their heart.
So when He passes through, will He pass over you?
Way back in Egypt on the night of the plague,
God passed through the camp just like He had said;
He came in judgement like nothing before,
But passed over each house with blood on the door.
God has promised a future judgment day,
But Jesus is the Lamb who takes sins away;
There’s nothing to fear when He passes through,
Apply Jesus’ blood and He’ll pass over you.
